25Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. (Ephesians 5:25-27 ESV)
There are many aspects to being a good husband that are addressed directly in scripture. But to truly understand the responsibility of a husband, you have to understand the role Christ chose to play in the redemption of His bride.
Christ died for us by taking our sins as His own. He became the liar, the murderer and the thief. It was not Jesus' fault we sinned. Yet He took those sins and bore the ultimate responsibility for them.
The role of husband is illustrated in Christ. The husband shouldn't say, "their actions (wife/kids) aren't my fault". Again, our sins weren't Jesus' fault. We should and do bear the ultimate responsibility for their actions.
The opposite is true as well. When we live out this truth, our families will see Christ in us and have a better understanding of the redemption that is available only through Christ.
